Henry Brewer, 1739-1796
gouache drawing; 30.5 x 24.3 cm
The most prolific artist in the early days of the New South Wales colony did not sign his work. Named the Port Jackson Painter by Bernard Smith, who was the first to discuss the stylistic traits that distinguish his work, the artist is now thought to be Henry Brewer. Brewer was a friend of Governor Phillip and a recognised draughtsman of quality. He came in the First Fleet as a midshipman and died at Sydney Cove in 1796.
