Lieut Robert Dale, 1810-1856,
hand-coloured aquatint; 19 x 274.2 cm
Both a topographical artist and an explorer, Dale arrived at Swan River in June 1829 to take up the position of temporary assistant government surveyor. From May 1832 he was stationed at King George Sound, exploring the region to the north. He was subsequently promoted to lieutenant and transferred to India. His work represents one of the earliest pictorial records of the region.
